Title: Word to the wise:

For anyone living in the European time zone the game mistre vs Jacka is scheduled at the worst possible time (4 AM). I believe that for Arimaa's, sake it would be wise to choose that time period as little as possible and avoid it like the plague for important games (IE high rating vs. High rating).

I would not add additional constraints to the players ...

Perhaps a third set of time slot preferences could be created to best fit the average spectator without inconveniencing the players?

The algorithm already tries to pick times that are more convenient for spectators.  However, the preferences of the players take absolute priority.  The spectators are considered only to the extent of choosing among several slots that are identically maximally convenient for the players.  If only one time slot maximizes the preferences of the two players, that time slot is automatically selected.

That's a much better way of putting "without inconveniencing the players" :)
I did not know this was already sort of in effect. So that particular time was the only "maximally convenient" slot for the two players?

Slot 4 was either the only one, or else the only equivalent ones were slots 1, 2, and/or 3, in which case the algorithm picked the latest of the maximally mutually preferred slots in order to make it as close to the weekend as possible.  :)

As per your very own suggestion, the last tiebreaker is no longer the latest time slot, but rather the one closest to the middle of the weekend by UTC reckoning.
