Title: Here is an older abstract game ...

... with some similar mechanics to Arimaa that players here might enjoy: GYGES. It is a French game developed in 1985 by Claude Leroy: http://www.gyges.com/

The similar mechanics are:
1) The starting placement of pieces on each player's first row is left up to each player's discretion.
2) The object is to score a goal (move a piece) past their opponents first row. And
3) There is a multi-step pushing concept called "rebounding" (or "bouncing").

It is played on a 6x6 grid with 3 different types of *communal* pieces moving 1, 2 and 3 spaces respectively. I've only just started to play this game, but so far it seems very interesting and "puzzley". Perhaps some French players here can comment on their experiences with this game and what they thought about it.

Note: I am not trying to make any sort of comparison with Arimaa (either positive or negative) as they feel completely different.

Thanks,
Quinn
