Title: Arimaa already known in 1614 ?
Post by pago on Aug 20th, 2010, 8:29am

During some search on Goolgle I found this book where "Arimaa" appeared in 1614.

http://books.google.fr/books?id=JcbeQEHDX-wC&pg=RA2-PA259-IA1&lpg=RA2-PA259-IA1&dq=Peregrina%C3%A7am+de+Fernam+Mendez+Pinto+arimaa&source=bl&ots=3-uhghevnE&sig=geiwFPcy1uyr3lxF3EVpQRltt9A&hl=fr&ei=MoFuTLZ41NngBpfdhd8I&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAgQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=arimaa&f=false

(there is also a french translation from 1830)

I did'nt know that Omar was so old  ::)

Interesting, that's written in old Portuguese and I can actually understand it.

It's talking about the nephew of the "King of Arimaa" (what place is this??). I'll read more later :)

An English translation of the story (http://books.google.com/books?id=Fb4VAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA100&lpg=PA100&dq=%22King+of+Arimaa%22&source=bl&ots=z4gJksX2JZ&sig=RSaOgGu4k6020llkajoD5IbbPjA&hl=en&ei=xhBvTMGZA8KclgeN0dHtDQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBIQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22King%20of%20Arimaa%22&f=false) might exist - if it is in fact the same story.

Reading the introduction, and some of the other content, it looks like it might be a work of fiction.
It wasn't clear to me where Arimaa was, but the story takes place in Japan (I think).

The story is only a few pages long.

There was a clan called Arima that briefly governed Shimabara Peninsula during the Sengoku Period, just when Mendes Pinto traveled to Kyushu Island if I'm not mistaken. I suppose he wrote the name with a double final A to make it more exotic, just like he seemed to exaggerate many details of his explorations :D
