Title: Going mainstream takes time
Post by Fritzlein on Jun 9th, 2011, 5:04pm
When I read this article (http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2011/06/settlers-of-catan-how-a-german-board-game-went-mainstream/239919/) about how Settlers of Catan is still increasing in popularity and slowly becoming mainstream after twenty years, it gives me hope that Arimaa's time is still coming.  Certainly Arimaa's momentum hasn't slowed down, and more people play it every year than did the year before.  I'm reminded of how my grandpa used to say, "You can grow a squash in a summer, but it takes a lifetime to grow an oak tree."

A rather aesthetic quote. The game is good, I infer?

Settlers of Catan is a fine game.  It's a bit long on luck for my tastes, but far superior to Risk or Monopoly, the category it is now taking head on.  For one thing, nobody gets eliminated, so you don't have that awkwardness in family or party play.
