These language models are trained by being shown an incomplete sentence and asked to fill in the missing words. They have millions of neurons and billions of connections. After training they start to become very conversational and it seems like you are talking to another person. They can probably passing the Turing test quite easily. Now a Google employee thinks their language model called LaMDA has become sentient. Essentially that it seems to be self aware and doesn't want to be used or abused. The conversation he posted seems quite creepy. Seems like you are chatting with a real person stuck inside a computer.
