Title: Announcing my presence with authority . . .
Post by nycavri on Aug 8th, 2009, 11:18am
Hi, all.

Avri here in New York City.  Longtime AbStrat fan (Cannon, Pikemen, etc.), sometime AbStrat game designer (Penguin Soccer) and newly converted Arimaa booster.

Discovered (and devoured) fritzlein's excellent Beginning Arimaa a few weeks back, then hopped over to the site to start playing.

Working my way up the Bot Ladder (10 down, plenty to go) and looking forward to the festivities of the various Challenges and Championships ahead.

I am especially enjoying replaying games in my head and discovering that, intuitively, I have come across some principle or other discussed in Beginning Arimaa - most recently, having lost control of my SW trap, I sent my Elephant and a Dog at the NE trap to force a rabbit to goal.  Very satisfying!

Pre-ordered the Z-Man set from ThoughtHammer, and impatiently awaiting it's arrival . . .

a

PS. Bonus points for catching the reference from the subject line . . .

Avri, it's great to have an enthusiastic new player.  I'm pleased as punch that my book helped draw you in to Arimaa.  My primary goal of writing Beginning Arimaa was to promote Arimaa concurrently with the sale of sets, so it is thrilling to me that it is already working.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions about anything.

Thanks, Karl.  Maybe next time we play it will be a little less one-sided . . .

Wow, that's scary. I can't even hold a fixed position in my head, let alone moving the pieces around :-)

Maybe you are gifted in this regards.

Thanks, Omar - one of the things that has eased my initiation into Arimaa has been the welcoming and open community here at the site.

As for replaying games in my head, "replaying" is too strong a word.  I don't recall specific positions, just the *shape* of the games.   (A strength of humans over bots?)

In the game I mentioned above, my recollection is that I was in deep trouble around my SW trap, and after examining the position, I decided that my only hope was to rush the NE trap.

A stronger opponent would have broken through my defenses before I could break through theirs, but I managed to gum up the nearside position with my Camel while my Elephant and Dog forced a way through for a Rabbit.

Looking forward to getting home in a couple of weeks to a more stable internet connection and time to play a little more regularly . . .

Welcome Piqui!  Thanks for the link to Super Duper Games.  That encouraged me to finally look up Penguin Soccer.  Avri had said he was a game designer, but he didn't mention that he was a successful game designer.  :P

Please enjoy Arimaa and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Heh.  Thanks, Karl.  So is this the right time / place to link to http://www.nestorgames.com where Penguin Soccer is available for purchase?

;D
