Title: Arimaa Flash Client
Post by omar on Jan 24th, 2004, 7:17am
I setup the Flash client for playing and watching games now. It still has a few bugs, but is for the most part very usable.

The times should now be displaying much better and there is a "Plan" button which opens a new window where you can make moves for both sides to plan your move.

Looks pretty good in general.  I played a whole game with it no problems.  I replayed a whole game with it no problems.  BUT... when i was watching your game live, it always showed pieces moving off the edge of the board at the end of every move.

I do not like the flash client.  Everything's always misaligned.  Perhaps if that can be fixed, I'll like it better.  Also, the end-of-game sounds are now gone.  I guess I'm just used to the way it was.  If it's more stable though, maybe that's the most important thing.

You must have a different version of flash to me!

On my version there's no problem with alignment.  You're probably right about the sounds... But that doesn't concern me.

I have the same version at home and at work, the most recent as far as I know.  Both have exactly the same problem with alignment.  When you move pieces around, the squares appear to shift slightly.  Very annoying.

By the way, there was a point in time where the flash client didn't have that misalignment problem.  But then something seems to have been changed, after which the alignment has been messed up.

Brian, how bad is the misalignment? If you could email me a screen capture that would be great. For me the vertical lines on the board are skewed a little, but no major misalignment.

Wow!  I was just watching your game against GnoBot, and what 99of9 said was happening, I could see.  At the end of every move, the last piece moved suddenly makes a long glide and exits stage left, completely off the board.   ???

I would recommend that we go back to the other client while these problems exist.  I would't want to have to watch the challenge match with all this strange stuff happening.

Screen capture... will do later tonight.

Correction... the glide off the board only seems to happen after gold's moves.

Correction to the correction... I saw it happen with blue now too.  But with gold, it happens every time.

I like the new way to select steps better. It's clearer.

The flash client is wittier too. In my postal game with Omar, it always tells my move is bad! (A window pops up telling "Gameserver: Bad Move <html>! ...") The move is accepted though.

The question is... does it tell Omar how to exploit your bad move?  That would be a great client!

The problem with the pieces sliding off the board has been fixed. It was being caused by the bot adding a space character at the end of the move string that it sends.

I think the "Bad Move" message is being caused by the client sending the move twice sometimes and the game server rejecting the move the second time it gets sent. Unfortunately it is not sending me any suggestions for good moves :-)

Sometimes when the players move fast, the client doesn't keep up with the game.  It shows new moves in the move window, but it doesn't keep moving the pieces on the board.

This is probably nothing to do with the new client, but I'll say it here anyway.

Arimaanator is refusing to leave our game board!!  We played a quick game, it lost on time (bad move I guess), and now it sits there pretending to still be thinking!  I think it's just a sore loser and doesn't want to lose rankings points.

The client seems to work fine. However one thing I think would be helpful is sounding an alarm  when a player has less than 10 sec to make a move.

Hi Brian,

With the new flash client if a new move comes in and the last move has not been shown yet or if the user is previewing the earlier moves in the game, it only adds the move to the move list and does not show it right away. So I guess what you noticed is really a new feature and not a bug.

Hi Toby,

Once in a while Arimaanator crashes and I have to restart it. That's probably what happened here.

Hi Naveed,

Good idea. I had also planed to add a warning sound when the reserve time is around 30 seconds, since it takes almost 20 seconds to take four steps and send it.

In my game against clauchau the dialogue box didn't work properly.

I saw one message he sent me (not sure if there were others).

But I couldn't see any of the messages I sent to him.  I have no idea if he got them either.

I saw none of your messages. There were four lines of mine. I had to type one of them twice. I've sometimes had to retype my line lately.

The plan button is reall great as it even allows watchers to try ideas out.

Hi Omar,
Having more problems with the in-game messages.  In the game we started.

Toby helped me recreate the chat problem and I got it fixed last week. Turned out to be a typo in a variable name in the program which processes the input from the flash client.

Also got the sounds for win and lose working. How do you like the rabbit crowing after it reaches goal :-)

Any way to get the text to have carriage returns in the window that shows your chat during the game?  Right now, if you type more than about 100 characters or so, the text keeps going way off to the right, and the only way to view it is to select it with your mouse.

I thought I fixed that last week. If you type a really long line it should auto wrap it now. Worked OK for me. Let me know if you still see the problem.

Another small bug:  When it's blue's turn to move, when watching the game from gold's point of view, it shows "0 steps" for blue, but "4 steps" for gold, instead of "4 steps" for blue.

Another thing that would be nice is for the boxes that say "Rabbit reached goal" and similar messages please not appear when observing a game.  When playing, these are good.  Otherwise, it is sufficient to see the reason for the end of the game at the top and bottom of the screen.

I personally don't mind that.  But I wouldn't mind if you removed it either.

Added a 20 second warning sound.

I don't hear it yet. Maybe this one could be louder  ;D
