Title: New Wiki
Post by omar on Jan 8th, 2009, 10:07pm
I was able to get the MediaWiki code installed and running on the Arimaa server. This is the same code used for the Wikipedia. I had been wanting to use this wiki for a long time, but always had trouble getting it setup. Finally got it setup now.

I really like the look of MediaWiki compared to Twiki. Also it is much more configurable and has a better access control system.

Eventually it would be good to get the content on the old wiki copied over to the new wiki. Anyone who would like an account on the new wiki post here or send a message through the contact page.

Omar, I'd like one to possibly add some WC game commentaries if needed.

It'd be nice if the the gameroom logins could be used for the wiki but I have no idea how hard that would be to do with mediawiki.

Just created the account; you should get an email soon with the login info.

Does anyone know how to load the arimaa pieces and board template onto the Wiki?  (Janzert perhaps?)  It would be nice to have a couple of pictures each round from the more interesting games.

Thanks Omar. The email was just confirmation that didn't include a password and the gameroom password didn't seem to work. I just had it reset the password and email it to me which worked fine though.

I'll see what I can do to get the board template copied over from wikipedia as well.

Oops, looks like file uploads are disabled on the wiki. So I guess we'll need Omar to upload the images for the template directly or enable uploading.

That's what I had to do to.

I hope we can get this working.  The ability to have editable board diagrams will be the most visible advantage of the new wiki over the old one.

I've enabled file uploads. Let me know if there is any other features that you would like turned on.

Thanks Omar. The board template is now copied over from wikipedia.

The one thing I noticed though is that since the template was resized last year to make it smaller the pieces no longer line up with squares on the board quite right. I'll see if I can get that fixed on both sites sometime soon.

[Edit: a test example of the template in use is on my user page

Thanks Omar and Janzert for getting the Wiki running (with Arimaa board & pieces)!

I've begun the process of splitting the coverage onto multiple pages to avoid clutter.  The main page is still here:
http://arimaa.com/arimaa/mwiki/index.php/2009_World_Championship

Each round will have a page like this:
http://arimaa.com/arimaa/mwiki/index.php/2009_Open_Classic_Round_1

I was quite excited to test out the new diagrams on the Tuks-Chessandgo game :)  This is a great new tool for the WC coverage.

The main tournament page now looks a bit awkward with all the links at the top.  Eventually I'd like to pretty it up with those fancy navigation toolbars that are ubiquitous on Wikipedia.  The kind that allow you to navigate to any page in the 2009 World Championship from any other page via a compact toolbar.

I'll try to remember to update the standings after each game on both the main page and the current round's page.

This is so awesome.  Adanac, you are a much better Event Reporter than I was.  The page-per-round format is great.  The Tuks vs. chessandgo diagram adds immensely to the commentary.  It makes it possible to get a reference point in the middle of the game, and not have to imagine everything.  Now I actually want to do commentary for a game just so that I can add a diagram!

i have a question, whats an SOS because i have two and everyone else has 1??? except for omar

SoS is the sum of opponent score.
You have 2 because both your opponents have a score of 1.
If chessandgo wins against The_Jeh and camelback wins against you, your SoS at the end of round 2 will be 4.

if i beat camelback will mine and chessand go beats the jeh, will it then be 3 ?

Correct.  Just add up the total number of wins for each of your opponents and that will tell you your Strength of Schedule (SoS).

Yes, it's a good thing you played chessandgo, unless you were hoping to get one of the three wins you need to qualify.  :o

I have copied commentary from previous years over into the new Arimaa Wiki.  I intend now to shut down the katieandkarl PBWiki.  Does anyone have any objections?

If anyone feels like touching up the format (or content!) of past commentary, please feel free.  I just dumped it over, so it is still a bit rough in appearance.

Thanks Karl, it's awesome to have all the events together in the same Wiki!  That inspired me to spend my lunchhour trying to get navigation toolbars onto the site.

I copied a sample toolbar over from Wikipedia and then customized it for the World Championships.  It didn't work at all, so I guess I'll need to copy over some source code before the toolbars will actually do anything.  This site probably explains it, so I'll take a look tonight  ;)

From the section "Copying from one wiki to another"

Edit:  Hmm, I put a bit more effort into it, and I may need some assistance on this one.  It seems I have to modify the MediaWiki:Common.css before I can use templates, but I don't have the authority to do so.

Thanks for looking into the toolbars, Adanac.  It would be very cool to be able to link all the commentary pages with some unified navigation.  Right now its a pain that Omar has to get some permissions set up for you to be able to do what you need to do, but in the long run the various levels of access control are going to be a blessing, I'm sure.  Already I'm glad that we can see who did every edit, and easily revert vandalism.

I've added links on the main page of the new wiki to point to all the pages on the old one that have content that still needs to be moved. Do people think that is enough to change the link in the gameroom to point to the new wiki?

Also the board in the upper right on the main page at http://arimaa.com/ still links to Fritzlein's original report page maybe that should be changed to point at the appropriate page (game report link (http://arimaa.com/arimaa/mwiki/index.php/2008_World_Championship_Finals#Fritzlein_vs._chessandgo_2)) on the new wiki as well?

Janzert, thanks for adding those links to the new wiki. I've changed the links in the gameroom and main page to use the new wiki now.

Whatever happened to the toolbar idea?  The navigation on the wiki could use a vast improvement.

I was thinking about updating the botbashers page, but my vision is to reformat the information into a series of tabs.  I am not sure this is possible with the current editing options available.
