Title: Arimaa Strategies and Tactics
Post by jshriver on Nov 17th, 2013, 12:41am
Is the PDF still available somewhere?

When I went to the page it auto forwards to the amazon page. I did buy the book, but a pdf would be nice so I could load it on my Kindle.

If I remember correctly, Jean wanted the PDF to be available for download in perpetuity, Omar didn't want it to be available at all, and they compromised by making it available for a finite time.  But don't rely on my memory; Jean and Omar would be the ones who know.

I'd like to buy the ebook, it's a pity it's not possible  :(

If you'd like that the pdf be made available, I'd suggest you contact Omar at arimaa_game@yahoo.com

I've been trying to get the book but shipping from the US costs more than the book itself and I couldn't find it anywhere else. :-/

Why does Omar decide about the availability of the PDF and not the author of the book?

The book is print on demand, so this can be easily remedied.  It is a matter of checking a couple of boxes in the distribution channels to allow Amazon EU and Amazon UK to sell it, and to choose a price in pounds and euros.  It's pretty silly to print in the US and fly it overseas instead of printing it out locally and shipping by ground.

It isn't listed in Amazon.de so I tried Amazon.com.
Will try Amazon.uk, since that's closer and thus probably cheaper to ship.

I think so.  You published through CreateSpace, like I did for Beginning Arimaa, right?  On the Member Dashboard when I log in to CreateSpace, I click on the book title to get to the Project Homepage, where it has a sequence of steps Create > Setup > Review > Distribute > Sales & Marketing.  In the Distribute tab there is a Channels link, which allows you (or at least allowed me) to select Amazon Europe as a channel.

That option wasn't available when I first published, which baffled me, but at some point I got an alert about it.  My recollection is that the only hoop I had to jump through was picking a list price; after that the sales just started trickling in automatically.  Hopefully it will be as easy for you.

Thanks a lot Fritz! Arimaa Strategies and Tactics will be available on amazon.eu and .uk within a week, at 8 euros, or £7.05.

After you read it, Ail, I urge you to consider writing a review for Amazon.de.  I believe that for my book there are no reviews except the ones you can borrow from Amazon.com; a German-language review would be awesome.

Nice, it seems available in all european national amazon websites. A search of arimaa on amazon.fr yields interesting results. I'm first, yay (sorry Fritz ^^), and there's obviously Beginning Arimaa, but there are also:

http://www.amazon.fr/Arimaa-Noelene-Aoide/dp/6139332559/
(huh? What's that?)
... and a ton of books with subtitles listing several games including arimaa in different languages ... all with a flower on the cover. Huh? Source wikipedia? By Mr and Ms wikipedia?

Interesting.
I already have your book, I think I payed a bit more for it.
What I found is the following: (searching on amazon.fr)
"The Indispensable Gaming Guide", a book which reviews some boardgames, including Arimaa. (The author gives Arimaa 4 out of 5 stars, you can read the review as free preview)
I also found papers of conference reports.
The "book" which you were linking has a german cover, but I couldn't find it on amazon.de
It says in the bottom-right corner:
"Up-to-date. This book uses Wikipedia as source".

I have no idea what is in the books with the flowers as covers.

Is someone perhaps offering to print the Arimaa Wikibook for us?

It arrived yesterday and I read about half an hour of it before becoming too sleepy.
I sure will review it once I'm through or at least a bit further.

The book already managed to increase my urge to play Arimaa even more because I now kinda know the basic principle of what I should do in all those situations where before I just thought like: "I maybe should advance something somewhere"

Sharp, while seemingly not so keen about this, still handles me on Level 8 of the phone-app because he makes the game become tactical really quickly and I don't have the time to execute all those long-term plans before I have to react.

He better be prepared once I reach the tactical-part of the book! ^^
