Title: Silver elephant directly opposite Gold elephant
Post by Belteshazzar on Jan 31st, 2015, 6:33am
I've noticed that expert Silver players now often start with their elephant directly opposite Gold's, which used to be cautioned against.  I did a quick search and couldn't find any discussion of this, although it's probably here somewhere.  I assume that if Gold takes four steps forward, Silver now has an effective way to counter without wasting steps?

Yeah, that's browni's setup. Silver would move his elephant through the c6 trap on the following move (asssuming Ed2 / ed7 etups). Gold's Elephant would likely be forced to move back to the 5th row within a few moves, so it seems that Gold would lose more time (or at least as much) in the process.

Note that browni uses it in conjunction with the unbalanced setup for an emh attack, where the temporary absence of the gold E allows the silver m and h to get into a good position.  It doesn't make much sense in a regular 99of9 setup.
