Title: Playing Arimaa using a standard chess set.
Post by n1010001 on Dec 28th, 2020, 10:05am
Great thing about Arimaa is that it can easily be played using a standard chess set(Staunton design). I started playing this way with my friend and found that the option proposed by the official rules(the substitution is as follows: elephant for king, camel for queen, horse for rook, dog for bishop, cat for knight and rabbit for pawn) doesn't work well enough. For example, it doesn't seem intuitive that cat is knight.

So I suggest a small change that worked well for me. My substitution is as follows: elephant for king, camel for queen, horse for knight, dog for rook, cat for bishop and rabbit for pawn. I imagine that bishop looks like elegant sitting cat and rook looks like massive pit bull with a spiky collar around his neck.

Perhaps someone will find such a replacement more suitable. Good luck in the game.

That's what I find most intuitive as well; I think that's the general consensus, but I could be wrong. Of course, an Arimaa set is far better. :D

When I played Arimaa on a chess set with my brother, I thought of the pieces more according to their values in chess, rather than as "elephants" or "cats." Different people think differently, I guess.

I use height, so my cats are rooks, dogs knights, horses bishops, etc.
