I just noticed that a new player mentioned a Jeffery Deaver book as their reference. After a bit of internet searching, I found out that his novel Edge mentions Arimaa on three pages! I'm going to read this book when I have time!

Without buying the book, I managed to read one of the passages that mentions Arimaa. It's a wide-ranging discussion of games that doesn't say much about what Arimaa in particular is, but the narrator calls it his favorite game!

Wow, that's nice. I was actually flirting with the idea to write a short story in which plot revolves around arimaa and Go in order to introduce both games to non-English speaking audience. J. Deaver's action encourages me to take my desire seriously.

Google books shows three mentions of Arimaa (no spoilers here I think):

On second thought, I have to read this. My local library has eight(!) copies of Edge, all of them checked out(!), but I'm sure I'll get a chance shortly.

I picked up a copy at the library a couple of days ago. Besides mentioning Arimaa a few times, there are also a couple of references to rabbits, or rabbiting - as in running - but I'm sure that it's just a poorly veiled attempt to plug the game some more. The most interesting part that I've come across so far though, is the mention of Omar. Quote:It was Omar, essentially a robotic head and torso, with a few servo motors inside that let him -- well, it --- mimic pretty well the movement and gestures of a human being... |
| Does the author know something about Omar that we don't?

| He's not an Indian-American, he's a Turk! In which case his name should be "Ömer"...

I heard there is a book out that mentions Arimaa like 300 times and even has Arimaa in the title! I think I will have to check that one out

Quote:The best part about Omar was that he wasn't simply a decoy. Surrounding the robot was a grid of ultraviolet and microwave beams. When Loving or his partner, presumably from a distance, took up position and fired the typical three-burst round into Omar's head, empty and inexpensive replaced, a computer would instantly correlate trajectory, speed and GPS coodinates and indicate on our handhelds where the shooter was, down to three feet. |
| I've got to get enough motivation to get to the library to read this.

I bought this book today. There were a bunch of copies at Walmart on a shelf labelled Bestsellers! Who knows when I'll have enough time to read it though...
