Who plays the longest games?

Just for fun, I ran a query on the average move count among rated games for all players with over 100 rated games.  I'm sort of surprised mine came out the longest, but I guess it includes lots of my long, boring wins over all the variants of Bomb.  Also I am terrible at finding a goal when I have the advantage.  Usually I play safe and try to build up a larger and larger material advantage, which prolongs the game relative to a playing style which goes for the throat.

Fritzlein 41.5
99of9 40.6
robinson 39.2
mouse 39.0
PMertens 38.9
bleitner 38.7
Paul 37.2
dtj 36.0
Belbo 35.9
Adanac 35.6
naveed 34.8
CeeJay 33.6
omar 33.4
6sense 29.3
eric 28.7
clauchau 28.3
Ryan_Cable 27.5
jdb 27.1
Arimanator 24.6
haizhi 20.7

I would have predicted speedy to top the list of bots, because it takes so many moves to beat speedy, but I forgot to consider that it has lots of quick wins to balance out its slow losses.  Bomb2005Fast, on the other hand actually has a losing record.

bot_Bomb2005Fast 44.8
bot_firsttry 41.8
bot_GnoBot 40.5
bot_speedy 38.2
bot_clueless 36.1
bot_Arimaazilla 31.4
bot_Arimaanator 30.6
bot_bomb 30.5
bot_Clueless2005Fast 30.1
bot_Arimaazon 28.4
bot_Occam 21.5
bot_Arimaalon 21.3

I always knew i was slow!  It's good to see that gnobot and firsttry are imitating me so well.

I'd be interested to see these split into wins and losses.  (Rated games only preferably :-P)

You are quite right, this statistic is much more interesting if split into wins and losses.  The main thing that jumps out at me is that bots in general win much faster than they lose, presumably because bad strategy loses slowly and good tactics win quickly.  Bomb2005Fast has an astonishing average loss of over 60 moves!

There doesn't seem to be much correlation between playing strength and winning fast.  I'm the slowest winner, and you are down there with me 99of9, but Omar and Belbo each win fairly quickly.

The fastest winners are:

haizhi 25.6
jdb 27.4
clauchau 27.7
Ryan_Cable 32.4
omar 32.4
RonWeasley 33.1
Belbo 35.2
naveed 35.6
Adanac 36.5
Paul 36.9
ytri 37.2
dtj 37.6
schmoe 38.4
mouse 39.2
bleitner 39.8
robinson 39.9
CeeJay 40.0
PMertens 40.2
Arimanator 41.4
99of9 41.8
6sense 42.2
Fritzlein 42.3

bot_Arimaalon 18.1
bot_Occam 19.6
bot_Arimaazon 24.1
bot_Clueless2005Fast 26
bot_Arimaazilla 26.4
bot_bomb 27.3
bot_Arimaanator 27.5
bot_Bomb2004CC 27.7
bot_Bomb2005Fast 28.6
bot_Aamira 33.2
bot_speedy 34.1
bot_clueless 34.8
bot_GnoBot 40.7
bot_firsttry 43.9

Whereas the slowest losers are

robinson 38.5
Paul 37.5
Belbo 37.3
PMertens 37.3
Fritzlein 37.3
99of9 36.4
omar 35.8
bleitner 34.6
Adanac 33.9
naveed 33.6
CeeJay 29.9
clauchau 29.2
eric 27.2
jdb 26.8
deselby 26.5
Ryan_Cable 22.6
Arimanator 21.0
6sense 20.9
haizhi 18.8

bot_Bomb2005Fast 61.0
bot_speedy 46.1
bot_GnoBot 40.3
bot_firsttry 39.4
bot_bomb 37.9
bot_clueless 37.4
bot_Loc 36.8
bot_Arimaazilla 35.5
bot_Arimaanator 33.9
bot_Arimaazon 31.6
bot_Occam 23.5
bot_Arimaalon 22.0

Good to know Im about in the middle Smiley

Interesting how haizhi is the fastest at winning and also the fastest at losing. I think he frequently resigned his games as soon as got into a tough position.

Thanks for producing those customized stats Fritz!

One thing that stands out for me is another sign of Robinson's skills.  Of course he is ranked well, which means he wins a lot.  But this shows us that even his losses have been the most hard-fought of all.  Paul too.  Well done both of you - it looks like Fritz and I have some catching up to do on that front!

I'm not that surprised about haizhi - remember he spent days and days just playing easy bots, and resigning if he got behind.  That gives him both quick wins and losses.

Omar's quick wins are very curious.  He is at the *opposite* end of the spectrum to Fritz and I, but as he has shown again in the postal, he is still easily my equal.  [although at least he didn't beat me in 32.4 moves!!!]

The Arimaa community trys to promote not resigning and playing the games to a complete and natural closure. There's a web page that discusses this:
