KingPin is a long-standing chess magazine & thrives on controversy.  Any feedback is much appreciated and should be posted to KingPin website.

Many thanks to Omar, Fritz, browni, chessandgo for the photos, and to aaaa (and others) for the advice on diagramming tools.

Thanks for the great Arimaa review/plug, Andy, in a place where the readers will be chess players.  I have long said that the chess community is the group of people who would love Arimaa the most if they tried it out.

It is particularly interesting to me to hear the grounds on which a chess player would recommend Arimaa to other chess players.  You focus somewhat on the computer resistance, naturally, but also hit pretty hard on the opportunity Arimaa offers for originality.  I can imagine that it could feel depressing to a chess player to be only retreading ground that others have visited with no hope at the end of the day other than doing exactly what they did, except a little better.  It can be exciting, in contrast, to be part of the Wild West of Arimaa.

The reason I haven't hit harder on this theme myself is that all the chess players I know seem perfectly content to go where others have gone before.  They don't perceive it as a defect; chess is still fun.  That's what I have tried to get at what it is that makes chess so fun in spite of (or perhaps because of) chess being so old.  I hope, however, that your insider perspective is more effective in drumming up chess player interest than mine has been.

I have one quibble with the content: in my opinion humanity's lead over the machines in the Arimaa Challenge is definitely shrinking, both in terms of Elo distance from best human to best computer, and in terms of the number of humans who are better than the best computer.  The human lead is still large, but it has been noticeably eroded in the past five years or so.  I still make us favorites to defend the Arimaa Challenge through 2020, but not prohibitive favorites.  See this thread for the evidence that has me running scared:

Thanks again for your lively advocacy of Arimaa in a chess forum!

Excellent article. It was an enjoyable read throughout.

I would be much too scared to write and post the closing argument on a chess site though. Wink
