Is this a hoax, or is there really an Arimaa, Finland?

If this is a hoax then it's an elaborate one. Check this:

There are millions of different locations around the world. This is just a coincidence, although an amusing one.

Cool, Arimaa will get a disambiguation page on Wikipedia Smiley

We could throw this in too:

Arimaa the town might be a Suomi compound word in which maa means land or country, while ari is probably the erosion of some word. Any Suomi speaker here to help us with the etymology of the word?

I vote that the first live Arimaa tournament/convention be scheduled on the shores of Lake Arimaa.

I could introduce you to a Sumo wrestler but I doubt it would help.  Grin

New slogan: Arimaa is a cross between chess and Sumo wrestling.  Or should that be Suomi wrestling?   Wink

Someone had told me once that Arimaa ment 'male lion' in Tamil (a language spoken in India). But I had no idea there a place called Arimaa. I second 99of9's idea Smiley

This is true, Tamil is my language. Though we pronounce the same way as Arimaa for "male lion" but we write as "Arima" in transliteration.

Interestingly, I just started a page on "Arimaa" on Tamil wikipedia and I have to create disambiguation page first because, an article already there for Male lion. Smiley

Ari is a common Finnish male given name. "Maa" can mean earth, land, ground or country, and "Arimaa" would mean "Ariland". As a native Finnish speaker that seems strange to me -- I'd expect the name to be "Arinmaa" ("Ari's Land"). But there could have been an n which disappeared over time. This theory seems plausible because the n makes "arinmaa" a bit laborious to pronounce, and if the word is said quickly, the n easily becomes inaudible, but the other phonems do not.

Then there are other possibilities. "Ari" could be an eroded version of "kari" (rock, reef, shoal), or maybe the entire name is actually of, say, Swedish origin. Some names of places in Finland have no likely etymological connection to any known language and are attributed to an unknown and extinct language. Still, I think "Arimaa" sounds like it could easily be Finnish, and it definitely doesn't sound like Swedish.

These are just my speculations and what I remember reading/hearing from somewhere. I'll write another reply if I come across some verified information.

As for the live tournament, Lake Arimaa is in Southern Finland so it's quite accessible. I'm not sure if there are any shops within walking distance of Lake Arimaa, but a part of the shores belongs to a nature reserve, so at least the scenery should be nice in the area.
